The Michigan Alliance of Reading Professors, as well as other professional organizations across the state are concerned about the toll that No Child Left Behind, standardized testing, and misinterpretations of the Michigan Grade Level Expectations are taking on the children of our state. More and more teachers are required to move away from meaningful and engaging classroom practices toward a curriculum filled with test preparation tasks and lessons designed to help students score better on standardized tests, but not necessarily learn more complex concepts and ideas.
We have set up this site for you, the teachers of Michigan, to tell your stories. What are you being asked to do by your districts, building principals, curriculum directors, or other teachers that is contrary to what you believe is best for the students in your classroom. Tell your stories. You are free to name the school district if you would like, but you are also free to disguise the name. You may use your full name, or you may stay anonymous. But, please do not name other people in your district.
